Sarah Miller Caldicott |
Topic: Innovate Like Edison:
Creatively Managing Project Complexity in a Flat World
Abstract:
Thomas Edison pioneered six world-changing
industries in less than 40 years, generating billions of dollars in market
value. Although Edison is most often remembered for his contribution
as the inventor of the incandescent electric light, he also created the
world of entertainment through his development of recorded sound and motion
pictures, as well as portable power via invention of the storage battery.
Edison felt an important source of his
prodigious creative outpourings was his ability to work on multiple projects
at once. At the height of his development of the electrical power
grid, Edison juggled over 40 projects simultaneously.
Sarah Miller Caldicott, a great grandniece
of Thomas Edison, MBA, and 25-year marketing veteran, will present the
results of her 3-year research effort probing the Thomas Edison archives
at Rutgers University, where she uncovered Edison’s Five Competencies of
Innovation?. Edison used these competencies throughout his 62-year
career to invent many of the foundational technologies which shaped the
20th century. Sarah will identify how managers today can successfully
leverage Edison’s Five Competencies in their own project management efforts,
and will detail aspects of Edison’s own project management system which
have recently come to light.
Bio:
A great grandniece of Thomas Edison, Sarah
Miller Caldicott has been engaged in creativity and innovation throughout
her life. Inspired by a family lineage of inventors dating back five

major brand-driven firms including Pepsico and Unilever. Sarah worked
in both domestic and international management capacities in bringing innovative
products to market globally including Degree, Finesse, and Suave.
Concerned that America was losing its competitive
edge, In October 2007, Sarah released a groundbreaking book offering a
first-ever analysis of Thomas Edison’s world-changing innovation methods.
Entitled Innovate Like Edison: The Five-Step System for Breakthrough Business
Success, Sarah’s book identifies the Five Competencies of Innovation™ which
spurred Edison to generate a record-breaking 1,093 U.S. patents over 62
successive years.
Innovate Like Edison has been endorsed
by Fortune Small Business, USA Today, Investor’s Business Daily, and 800-CEO-READ.
Her book has been translated into 3 languages, and serves as a textbook
at leading universities including Northwestern University, the McCormick
School of Engineering, and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Innovate Like Edison was also released in paperback in October 2008. In
addition to her guest appearances on PBS television, the Fox Business Channel,
and NPR radio affiliates across the country, Sarah has been featured in
the New York Times.
Sarah is President of her own Chicago-based
consultancy, The Power Patterns of Innovation, offering innovation training
and consulting services to organizations of all sizes. Sarah and
her team assist companies in igniting the innovation process using Edison’s
timeless best practices. An award-winning speaker, Sarah also inspires
audiences nationwide with her message about how individuals, teams, and
entire organizations can use Edison’s Five Competencies of Innovation to
sustain competitive advantage in the global economy.
In April 2009, Sarah will reinstate the
Edison Awards?, a series of honors recognizing Innovation and Innovators.
The Edison Awards are designed to inspire individuals of all ages that
innovation success is something we can all achieve. This year’s Edison
Awards winners include David Kelley of IDEO, and Dr. Susan Desmond-Hellman
of Genentech.
Sarah received her BA from Wellesley College,
and holds an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
She has two college-age boys, Nicholas and Connor, and resides in Oak Park,
