Abstract
The skill of empathy continues to be in high demand for those in leadership. It is especially important for anyone aspiring to make it to the C-Suite. While many people recognize empathy as a skill that can help them connect better with others, build interpersonal relationships, and lead teams, it’s also very often misunderstood.
Some confuse sympathy for empathy. Others mistake reassurance and giving advice for this powerful skill. As a leader, either on your way to the executive suite or already there, you need the undiluted emotional intelligence skill of empathy to be successful.
Empathy is not just about recognizing and understanding the thoughts and feelings of another person, it also involves being able to articulate that understanding and behaving in ways that respect others’ feelings. Contrary to what many think, you don’t have to agree with someone to empathize with them.
This presentation takes you on a journey toward understanding what empathy is, and what it’s not. You will learn specific, actionable steps that you can put into practice right away. In addition, you become aware of the empathy-seeking, who seem bent on extracting every ounce of compassion from you, and how to respond to them. Armed with these, you’re better positioned to be a transformational leader for your teams and community.
