Abstract
This webinar explores the history of New Jersey bridge construction, highlighting key Project Management concepts.
In this presentation, we will first cover George Washington’s strategic burning of the original Stony Brook Bridge during the Revolutionary War and the subsequent building of the replacement Stony Brook Arch which was one of the first Federal public works projects in the history of The United States.
We will then cover the Delaware and Raritan Canal and the Camden and Amboy Railroad (the predecessor to the Pennsylvania RR, Penn Central, and eventually Amtrak). This section covers the funding and routes of the two projects through central New Jersey.
We will then shift our focus to Washington Roebling and all the innovations to bridges that he developed with the eventual building of the nearby Brooklyn Bridge the first suspension bridge in the area. While the Brooklyn Bridge is in a different state, it still has New Jersey ties as Washington Roebling built prototypes and examples in the state of New Jersey, with replicas that still exist around the state.
During the presentation we will cover key Project Management concepts including funding, developing innovative technologies, and organizing teams.
